When adults are the only people living in your home, you don’t really have to think about safety very much. But when you are thinking of adding children to your home, you have to start thinking about how you will keep them safe from some of the dangers you might not have even considered before. This process can feel a little bit nerve wracking for many people, but you can take it a step at a time so that you can build safety without having to get overwhelmed or stressed out.
Block Off Unsafe Areas
The first tool you have in your belt to improve safety is to block access to areas of your home that are unsafe. This can include areas like your stairs or any cabinets with harsh chemicals. You also want to block off your bathroom so your child can’t get access to water without you present. Blocking off areas that are unsafe can be an easy way to improve safety because you won’t have to constantly stay on guard. Instead you can trust that your kids can’t get to the more dangerous parts of your home.
Lock Up Hazardous Materials
Next, you want to make sure that any potentially hazardous materials are kept out of your child's reach and potentially locked. These materials can include medicines and cleaning supplies among other things. Ammonia and other strong bases can be as dangerous as strong acids. It’s important to do a thorough accounting of all the hazardous materials in your house so you can make sure that they are all properly locked. Keeping them close to each other can limit the amount of locking you need to do and make your job a little bit easier, since you won’t have to worry about multiple locked spaces.
Attach Furniture to the Walls
Most furniture like dressers and bookcases come with brackets that can be used to attach them to the wall. However, many people neglect to actually use those tools. Making sure that your furniture is properly secured can help you to keep your kids safe and prevent a potential furniture fall that could be dangerous or even fatal.
Keeping your kids safe is an important part of parenthood, and it definitely comes with challenges. But if you can ensure that your home is a safe place for your children, it will be much easier. These steps can get you started so that your kids have a safe place to be.
