Especially during times fraught with strain and stress, it’s critical to bring a peaceful atmosphere into your home. Regardless of square footage, aesthetic, or design preferences, having what is peaceful to you matters. Your space needs a good shot of zen! How do you create a calming atmosphere in your home?
Use Colors
Color is always a major influence in a home, and creating a calm atmosphere is no different. Science has explained for years that reds, oranges, and yellows are “awake and alive” colors which do not bring a soothing atmosphere. This doesn’t mean they’re not awesome, nor that there are not warm variations which can be soothing! According to Wow 1 Day Painting, blues are traditionally seen as more peaceful. Your best bet is finding a natural palette of colors which you enjoy, and choosing from them what will help your family unwind.
Add Houseplants
According to Complete Dezign + Build, plants have been shown to improve mental health and improve the mood of a room. Thankfully, there are many options for low maintenance plants which only like to be watered with a couple of ice cubes per week, and don’t require a lot of sunlight. Choose things which fit your space and the amount of light available to the room. If in doubt, find a friend who already loves plants, and ask for advice for your space!
Less is More
It can be tempting to attempt to find all the peaceful, supposedly zen inducing elements and bring them into your one room. But, to create a sense of peace and calm, The Spruce says that the fewer things there are in the room itself, the better. One technique which is helpful is to take a picture of your room, and then look at the photo to see what you notice first. Is it what you want to notice? Is it a pile of books you don’t like, or a hideous lamp you inherited? Your room will feel more peaceful if you include in it only the things that you use, love, and need.
Space does make a happy home, whether it is space between furnishings for walking, space for plants to enjoy growing into, or space for showcasing color. This is easier on your budget as well, as you no longer have to collect things to make your home happy. It can be happy with fewer things and a calming space!
