One of the best parts of owning a home is decorating! It can be extremely fulfilling to take an empty space and make it yours. At the same time, it can be a little intimidating. If decorating your home has you feeling a bit overwhelmed, rest assured that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Just take the time-honored elements that make for a beautifully-appointed home and personalize them to your tastes and needs.

Wall Art

While minimalism is a movement that is rapidly gaining popularity, every home should have at least a few pieces of art on the walls. Wall art provides the ultimate opportunity to express yourself in your decor and to harmonize your accent colors. In fact, wall art can be the starting point for the rest of your interior design elements. Choosing art is easy if you keep in mind these basic principles. First, select pieces that speak to you. If you don’t love them, you will tire of them quickly. Second, choose a piece of art that is the right size for the space. Too big or too small just won’t look right. And third, make sure your wall art matches the mood you want for the room.

Add Plants

Every home needs a few plants. Plants can add a nice touch to your home and make it seem more inviting. Plus, plants clear the air, improve your emotional health, and reduce stress. Thankfully, a green thumb isn’t required to find success with houseplants. Even if you have a long history of murdering plants, you should be able to keep a few hearty indoor plant breeds alive. These include pothos plants, philodendrons, assorted cacti, succulents, aloe, and the snake plant. Of course, if you are lucky enough to have a green thumb, go crazy on anything that strikes your fancy!

Accent Lights

Lighting can lift a room’s mood, improve functionality, add dimension to your home, and literally transform a space. The best lighting is a mix of types, including accent lighting, overhead lights, and varying heights of lamps. Short table lamps pair well with an interesting, low-hanging chandelier. Tall floor lamps add coziness to a room. Choose lighting that matches the style, colors, and mood of your home.

Your home should be a space that reflects you. It should also be a place where you love to be. Your decor plays a major role in accomplishing both of those goals. As you plan the design of your interior, be sure to include wall art that you love, plants that nurture your soul, and lighting that brightens your mood.
